"Dumas' first hometown survey in two decades reframes her painted figures as an ethics of looking at inherited images."
Marlene Dumas returns to the Stedelijk with a major survey organized around the burden that images place on bodies. Paintings from the 1980s onward — including Jesus Sermon, Stern, and new works made during the past year — are joined by source clippings and Polaroids she has kept since art school. The presentation argues that her practice is less portrait than forensic: an inquiry into what painting can responsibly do with evidence.
